The Shop Around The Corner | Ernst Lubitsch | 1940

When James Stewart was at the height of his career, there was no more likeable actor. Even when playing a creep (Vertigo), he was still Jimmy Stewart. Part of his appeal came from branding – honest, average, hard-working. The brand suggests we’re just like him, though I think, maybe, it’s more likely we’d all want a friend like him.

The Shop Around The Corner, released the same year as his Oscar Winning performance in The Philadelphia Story, finds Stewart on the cusp of becoming the icon we now know. And, for a moment, leaving beside all the numerous other merits* of this film, watching Stewart on the verge is exhilarating. Here is a joyful performance from an exceptional actor.

WARNING: Preview is 4 minutes long. I’ll never get over why old trailers were so long, not that short ones are better, but they are shorter.

* Other merits:

Ernst Lubitsch, the director, made some of the best comedies of any director. His work is vastly under appreciated.

The dialogue.

Margaret Sullivan is listed before James Stewart in the credits. It’s not a typo. There is a reason for that.

It’s un-remake-able. They’ve tried. Besmirch all you want, You Got Mail can not sully the reputation of this film.

While it is the ‘source material’ for the Will Smith film, ‘source material’ is more of a light blanket in a snow storm than a duvet.

Anyway.

I stumbled across this on Twitter: http://www.stumbleupon.com/su/1lYc5N/flavorwire.com/250477/are-these-the-best-vampire-novels-of-the-century

The Apartment | Billy Wilder | 1960

There was a time when Billy Wilder was king, and rightly so. Wilder’s resume includes: Sabrina, Some Like it Hot, Double Indemnity & The Apartment. Cameron Crowe, one of Wilder’s most adamant fans, literally wrote the book on Wilder’s importance. Frankly, it’s hard to image a Cameron Crowe film without Billy Wilder.

The Apartment, starring Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine, is a marvelous romantic comedy. Partly because it’s Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine, I mean, does it get better? And partly because their love story works as a microcosm of the rights and wrongs of human nature. There are no idiot plots in this film.

This is a wonderful film to curl up with a bowl of popcorn and a martini. Enjoy!

Sometimes a photo is just not enough to showcase your amazing product. In this digital age, video helps bring to life the handmade goods you shed blood, sweat, and tears to create.

We can create a gorgeous, custom, High Definition web video for your esty shop to help bring a new audience to your product, and to delight the customers you already have with your newest creation.

These videos are excellent for Facebook, Twitter, and, of course, for your personal shop website.

Let us help show off your wares with wit and magic, and a touch of high definition binary code.

Videos are available for customers who either seek the full package = we will write the script, cast the actors, direct, film, edit, and create the final video output for either your website or host it on a video site we create for you.

Videos are also available for someone looking for a bit less. Perhaps you have footage you don’t know what to do with? Or have a script you need help realizing.

Prices vary on expanse of production, and distance from Philadelphia PA (where our studio is located).

To see the videos we recently made for Etsy’s own PEG AND AWL (http://www.etsy.com/shop/pegandawl) go to our vimeo page:

TABLET: http://vimeo.com/34628260

BATH CADDY: http://vimeo.com/34632450

We have been working in this industry for over 6 years, shooting and editing videos for everyone from National Geographic to Nickelodeon to Shaquille O’Neal to Self Magazine to One.org

Let us create something amazing for you.

Convo us (Emily & Austin) with any questions, no matter how small, and let us see if we can create a video that is perfect for you.
